Wyclef Jean returns to Columbia Records with “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant,” the artist’s first full-length album for the label since his third solo album entered the Billboard Top 200 at #6 in June 2002. “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant” is slated for release this autumn.
With “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant,” his sixth full-length studio album, Wyclef Jean continues the autobiographical musical odyssey he began a decade ago with his 1997 triple-platinum debut solo album, “Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival Featuring Refugee All-Stars” (aka “The Carnival”). Wyclef gave his fans their first taste of “The Carnival II” with the release of the album’s lead-in single, “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill),” featuring Akon, Lil’ Wayne and introducing Niia. Released in August, the single rapidly made its first Billboard chart appearance entering the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart at #3. “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)” is now available digitally.
According to Wyclef, “The Carnival II” is “a continuation of ‘Gone Till November” (his 1997 Top 10 signature hit from “The Carnival”). I focus a lot on the songwriting.” For his much anticipated new album,
Wyclef has once again called upon his friends, showcasing his musical dexterity as he draws from an extraordinary and diverse roster of collaborating guest artists including Paul Simon (on “Fast Car”), Mary J. Blige, T.I., Norah Jones, Akon, Serj Tankian (of System Of A Down) (on “Trouble Again”), Lil’ Wayne, and Shakira, to name a few. Wyclef produced the entire album with his long-time production partner, Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis, with whom he has worked since the beginning of the Fugees.
“The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant” is the first full-length album from Wyclef Jean since 2006, when the artist struck a chord in mass pop consciousness with “Hips Don’t Lie,” the chart-topping Grammy-nominated international smash hit duet with Shakira.
Rick Ross is back with the Suave House release “Rise To Power”. This album contains exclusive tracks and guest appearances including Scarface, The Clipse, Next, Devin Tha Dude, Big Duke of Boyz N The Hood, Noah and more. The first single will be “Street Love” featuring R&B group Next. The album hits stores Sept. 18.
Before Rick Ross gained national success, his talent was discovered by legendary music mogul Tony Draper. The top-selling Miami rapper was one of many up and coming artists signed to Draper’s Suave House Records. Ross was going to continue the tradition of seminal artists to debut on the powerhouse label until legal woes with Suave House’s parent company kept the album from ever being released. With Draper’s permission, Rick Ross went on to explore other options and the rest is history.

In a recent interview with XXLMag.com, Q-Tip revealed that he and Common will be forming a group together called The Standard.
“Me and Common [are] getting ready to form a group,” ‘Tip tells XXLMag.com. “We’ll probably run it through the Uni [Universal Records] joint because we’re both on Universal.”
Q-Tip says it was Common who suggested the idea.
“He was like, “We just need to do a record.” So I’m really excited about that.”
The two have yet to start recording material but will begin to do so when they hit the road together in the coming weeks.
Production on the album will rest mostly on The Abstract.
“I’m probably gonna do a lot of it,” ‘Tip says. “And we’ll get Kanye [West] on a couple things, but you know, that cat is busy.”

SOULJA BOY IS NUMBER 2 ON HOT 100 CHARTS!
Fergie score her third No. 1 hit from her solo album “The Dutchess” this week as “Big Girls Don’t Cry” inches up 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She thus becomes the first female artist with three No. 1s from one album since Christina Aguilera in 2000. “Big Girls” also ascends to No. 1 on the Adult Top 40 chart, ending a 52-week reign by male acts.
Last week’s Hot 100 No. 1, Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls,” slips to No. 5. Jumping 5-2 as the fastest growing digital track is Soulja Boy’s “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” while Kanye West’s “Stronger” rises 5-3 and powers to No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs with 135,000 downloads.
Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” featuring Keri Hilson slides 3-5, but earns him his second straight No. 1 as a lead vocalist on the Pop 100. Plain White T’s’ “Hey There Delilah” is down 4-6 on the Hot 100, while T-Pain’s “Bartender” featuring Akon holds at No. 7 and Fabolous’ “Make Me Better” featuring Ne-Yo rebounds 9-8.
Rounding out the top 10 are Plies’ “Shawty” featuring T-Pain (11-9) and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z (8-10). Newcomer J. Holiday’s “Bed” is the fastest growing track at radio this week and earns a 24-15 boost on the chart.
The Hot 100’s top debut comes from Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel’s “Fabolous” at No. 76. The song is drawn from the “High School Musical 2″ soundtrack, which yesterday began a second week at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. 50 Cent’s “I Get Money” is the only other new entry at No. 85.
Keyshia Cole is No. 1 for a second week on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with “Let It Go,” although “Bed” gaining with a 6-2 climb. Alicia Keys needed less than a full day of airplay to earn Hot Shot Debut honors with “No One” at No. 65; her new album, “As I Am,” is due Nov. 13 via J.
On Hot Country Songs, Kenny Chesney sets a new high debut threshold in the modern era and matches the all-time high bow on the list with “Don’t Blink” at No. 16. The song tops the Nielsen BDS-era record set when Keith Urban’s “Once in a Lifetime” opened at No. 17 in August 2006. It also matches Buck Owens’ No. 16 start with “My Heart Skips a Beat” in March 1964.
Chesney had been at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs with another track, “Never Wanted Nothing More,” which slides to No. 3. The new chart-topper is Rodney Atkins’ “These Are My People,” his third straight No. 1 on the chart.
Gloria Estefan leaps 7-1 on Hot Latin Songs with “No Llores,” her 14th No. 1 on the tally. It’s the first single from her new album, “90 Millas,” due Sept. 18 via Burgundy.
Billboard’s rock charts are unchanged, with Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender” leading Modern Rock for a second week and Three Days Grace’s “Never Too Late” No. 1 on Mainstream Rock for a fourth.
“I threw [Roc-A-Fella chain] s**t in the garbage. One day I was in 40/40 and something went wrong with the Roc La Familia situation, and I took off the chain, I took off the chain and let everyone see it and threw it in the garbage.”
This is what Nore did once he got news that the Roc-a-Famlia situation was over! Nore’s new album is currently in stores now.

Besides the paparazzi flashing bulbs while they were camped outside the studio, VMA 2007 performer T-Pain says working with Britney Spears was relatively event-free. He was in the lab with Spears a few months ago — right in the wake of her head-shaving episode, although Pain describes the pop superstar as normal. So normal they were able to knock out three songs — “Cold as Fire,” “Boyfriend” and “One of a Kind” — in a short amount of time.
When she met up with Pain in the studio, “she had a wig and cowboy hat on,” he told us last week while in town for Screamfest ‘07 “She came in there, shook my hand and went right into the booth. She was smiling the whole time. In an hour we had a song. I sang it first and she sung over what I did … in key and everything! Then did a whole ‘nother song. She was about her business.
“I came out the studio and … across the street [were] people with cameras on top of the building and waiting for her to come outside,” he continued. “I come out, they are like, ‘Oh, oh … stop.’ I was like, ‘What about me? I got hits.’ ”
Indeed Pain does. Earlier this year it looked like Akon or R. Kelly would easily take home the Nate Dogg Award for Collaboration King, but Pain has slid in there with an endless array of winning guest spots for Kelly, Bow Wow, Plies, Fabolous and DJ Khaled. Pain’s cameos have been so big that they have dominated his set on the Screamfest. During last week’s stop in New York, Pain was one of the most popular attractions, inspiring the youth to scream at the top of their lungs.
“Only ones that are not competing on this tour is me and [Yung] Joc,” Pain said. Joc, T-Pain, Lloyd and Yung Berg are the tour’s opening acts, while Ciara and T.I. are co-headlining (see “T.I., Ciara To Headline Latest Scream Tour”). “I don’t really do no songs off my album. I do 12 songs in 25 minutes and they all hits. I come out to ‘[I'm] Sprung,’ do [Bow Wow's] ‘Outta My System,’ [Kelly's] ‘[I'm a] Flirt,’ [Huey's] ‘Pop, Lock & Drop It,’ [Plies'] ‘Shawty.’ We run through it. It’s continuous, nonstop. We stop maybe one time so I can drink some water.”
Once he gets offstage, Pain doesn’t slow down — he has a functional studio on his tour bus, and has been recording and producing for E-40 (“E-40 did like three songs”), Chris Brown and more. On Brown’s upcoming single “Kiss Kiss,” — a T-Pain production — he uses the Auto-Tune audio-processor effect he’s made popular again in recent years. T is cool with Brown using the voice enhancement but says he doesn’t appreciate anybody else trying to emulate his style.
“You gotta ask my permission, man. That’s me,” a smiling T-Pain said when asked about other people using the Auto-Tune. “Like when I did ['Kiss Kiss'] with Chris Brown, he used the [Auto-Tune], he asked my permission.
“You gotta sing in a certain tone of voice,” he added, explaining how to use the device properly. “You gotta sing in a key that’s between off-key and on key. You have to sing a half of a note. Some people are like, ‘Let me put this on my voice and it’ll sound good.’ I think the only [other] person that could use it without my permission is R. Kelly.”
Pain is giving fans permission to take what he did and try to make it better by remixing his song “Bartender.” He’s holding a remix contest in which the winner will find their remix turned into a ringtone — and might even get offered a record contract, if T-Pain deems them good enough. (Fans must submit their entries by September 23.)
“I don’t want anybody to be the new T-Pain, the new Akon, I want you to be somebody no one has heard,” he said. “That was me when I got in the guy. I was the new vocoder guy.”
Pain says he was inspired almost three years ago to use the Auto-Tune by Teddy Riley, the pioneering king of New Jack Swing, who used a vocoder.
“You gotta imagine I [grew] up with music around the time he was poppin’,” T-Pain said. “It sounded like his verse was an instrument. … Then I heard [Zapp singer Roger Troutman] on [2Pac's] ‘California Love’ — it was a wrap for me. … I had been looking for that effect for a long time. That’s me now. Remember back in the days when it was just music and it wasn’t vocals at all? I was trying to make my vocals like an instrument ’cause I used to listen to straight instrumentals.”
Pain has been using the effect for about three years now — but he doesn’t use it on tour.
“I can sing a little bit too now,” he laughed.
Some detractors have criticized him, though, saying he relies on the Auto-Tune too much and isn’t a true singer.
“Look who’s using it now,” he said, answering the charge. “Chris Brown is using it. Jamie Foxx, Lionel Richie. It’s so many people that can sing [who are using it]. What’s to hide? It’s nothing to hide. To me, sounding good ain’t important — it’s song content and feeling. You don’t have to be able to sing. A lot of people are paying attention to looks and sound. In the old school, you barely had to sing at all. You just have to talk on your intro, go through and scream and you got a song.
“I could care less,” he added about the criticism. “It’s making me money.”
