2008 ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL PERFORMERS INCLUDES CHRIS BROWN, MARY J BLIGE AND KANYE WEST


Organizers of the annual Essence Music Festival have announced some of the acts that will take part in the 2008 festival in July.


Kanye West, Chris Rock, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Morris Day and The Time, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly are the acts announced in a news release Thursday.


Essence is billed as "the nation's largest annual African-American event celebrating Black music and culture." An estimated 200,000 people attended the festival last year when it returned to New Orleans. The event has become an annual summer celebration in New Orleans, although it was held in Houston in 2006 because the city was still early in its recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Today VH1 announced that it has given the green light to seven new productions including shows featuring Snoop Dogg, Luke Campbell, Tiffany "New York" Pollard and the comedian Margaret Cho. Big Snoop Dogg will be performing on a series of shows called "Storytellers" and will debut on March 31st. Snoop will will tape the episode this month in Brooklyn, will perform a catalog of songs and explain the inspiration behind each. In addition, VH1 will have four new "celebrity" sitcoms, including eight episodes of Uncle Luke's "Parental Advisory" and ten episodes of a new New York show called "New York Goes To Hollywood." Uncle Luke's show will feature him balancing his life while managing an adult entertainment empire while New York's show will her ditching the winner of last seasons "I Love New York," for Hollywood and the dreams of becoming an actress. "This new slate of provocative ‘Celebreality’ shows, insightful music documentaries and exclusive music performances will keep our success streak going while fueling our expanding original programming efforts,” said Jeff Olde, VH1’s new Executive Vice President of Programming and Development. Margaret Cho's "The Cho Show" and Hulk Hogan's daughter Brooke's show "Brooke Hogan Knows Best" will also debut on VH1 this season.
