Grammy nominated R&B singer Kelly Price surprised host Wendy Williams today when she showed up in the studio audience of yesterday’s episode of ‘The Wendy Williams Show’. Kelly Price on her experiences with being over-weight in the music industry:
WW: It’s time for ‘Ask Wendy’ but in our audience today we do have a special woman, its Kelly Price, the R&B singer…. I remember when you first came out and I was on radio and you were considerably heavier then you are right now, and I remember the big hubbub in the industry…she weighs too much, you got a little liposuction
WW: Oh you didn’t get liposuction, you lost it on your own?
KP: I did but I promise you I’m thinking about it [laughs] I’m 40 now, it’s harder [to lose weight]!
WW: The word was they [music industry] pushed you to get liposuction, a nose job and some other things…
KP: Certainly, certain individuals at one point, one thing people don’t realize is I actually walked into a room with an executive and I said, ‘If you want me to have surgery I will.’ It was so emotional I don’t want to cry. He said, ‘No, I signed you because I love your talent.’ There were a couple of shifts there and even with all the hard work I went I did it. Having my mother get sick with cancer and having my husband’s mother die of breast cancer that pushed me harder to get healthy. But I just remember going to the first video shoot after losing 100lbs and having someone from the label say, ‘Can you get another girdle on her, she’s not small enough.’
WW: WOW! That’s just a cautionary tale. I’m glad to see you are producing your music independently now.
